On my morning walk, I noticed that the cottonwoods at the edge of the property have some freshly drilled holes. Are these someone's house? Or just bug-finding holes?
A beautiful downy woodpecker has been visiting my garden, for the suet and sunflower seed. Perhaps he is responsible for this?

18 March: This morning a northern flicker is at the top of the cottonwood, screeching his little heart out. The bird site says they can't drill into hard wood and need rotten or soft trees for nest-holes,
and my guess is that cottonwood is soft (I hope not rotten) so this
could be his hoped- for home. A flicker used to visit my suet feeder
often -- I got a super-large one just for him -- but I've not seen him
here this year at all. Of course, I could have missed him.
