it’s habit that holds
me together, rising
as the east window
pales into morning
the body responds
to requirements
of the moment:
nutrition, hydration
elimination
the dog’s demands
the cats’ insistence
the pull of addictions
caffeine, nicotine
grey rain washes
away the snow
beyond closed
shutters, crows
call from far away
it’s habit that holds
us together, hearts
in their cages, sliced
and shredded, but
holding, holding
